Check Out: K.Flay – “Sunburn” (CoS Premiere)

Caucasian female rappers have been slowly but surely chipping away at the male, black hegemony of hip-hop. Some of the efforts may be, well, laughable, but some of these women are making some irrefutable headway. Avoiding the “hardcore” or “sexualized” paths of her compatriots, San Francisco’s K.Flay has a decidedly more indie approach.  In fact, our first introduction to the West coast flowesta featured a sampling from The xx.

This month, K.Flay returns with a new EP, Eyes Shut, and you can hear the track titled “Sunburn” below. Don’t be fooled by what sounds like a few bars of standard-fare intro. When K.Flay drops in with her impressive and swift flow, you’ll know you aren’t listening to anything standard. Lyrics range from witty (“Jack-in-the-mutha-fuckin’-box/I got quarter pounder distention”) to personally revealing (“My father looks down on me and says ‘What a crying shame’/ incompetently navigating treacherous terrain”) in a song of introspective and contemplative musings. Oh, and her vocals in the chorus are killer. Check it out for yourself below.

K.Flay will drop her self-produced Eyes Shut on January 31st. She kicks off a five-date trek with Brooklyn rapper Theophilus London today in Seattle. See her complete tour itinerary below.
