Brooklyn’s ethereal R&B artist Tom Krell (aka How To Dress Well) has recorded a cover of Xiu Xiu’s “Clowne Towne” (from their 2004 LP Fabulous Muscles). This reworked version focuses solely on Krell’s voice, which shifts back and forth between squeaky and emotional and low and brooding. Stream it below (via FACT).

Fabulous Muscles is one of my all-time fave records, and ‘Clowne Towne’ is definitely in my top 10 all-time songs,” Krell told FACT. “I love the musical composition so much, but I’m especially attracted to the story, the openness of it, the way it treats incredibly complex emotions in a language that is deeply sad but not falsely heavy – very straightforward and almost trite but never cliché, and never totally transparent.”

How to Dress Well’s cover appears on an all new compilation benefiting the start-up publication Ad Hoc, a new venture by the creators of the late Altered Zones. The rest of the compilation features unreleased music by the likes of Grimes, Rhys Chatham, JEFF the Brotherhood, Twerps, Matthewdavid, Pictureplane, and many, many more. It’s available to those who pledge $25 (for a digital download) or $40 (physical copy) at Ad Hoc‘s Kickstarter page.
