Check Out: The Lumineers – “Ho Hey” (CoS Premiere)

By Chris Coplan on February 15th, 2012 in CoS Premieres, New Music, News

Lots of bands have interesting ways to describe themselves, be it with interesting analogies or multi-tiered genres. Denver folk-rock trio The Lumineers describe themselves a bit differently, detailing their unit as “born out of sorrow, powered by passion, ripened by hard work.” Band members Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites formed the band back in New Jersey after the death Fraites’ older brother, who was a close friend of Schultz. The band completed their lineup after a move to Denver and the addition of Neyla Pekarek. Since then, they’ve released one demo EP in 2009 and a self-recorded eponymous EP last year. The band’s proper introduction comes when they release their full-length self-titled debut on April 3rd via Dualtone Records.

After gigging all over the U.S. and Canada, the band’s defining track has become “Ho Hey”, which is, unsurprisingly, the album’s first single. Technically speaking, the track represents a more standard take on rural Americana music, complete with ragged-sounding acoustic guitar, the stomping of feet and hands, and lots of call-and-response vocals. Even still, the trio adds an endearing, romantic energy to the formula, creating a cut that builds and swells with feelings of joy and regret, resulting in something truly worth getting caught up in like an old Southern revival. Stream it below.

“Ho Hey” is also available for purchase via iTunes. And for more music from the band, head over to Paste to stream their four-song EP Tracks From The Attic.

The band will also be on tour throughout the spring/early summer, including gigs at South by Southwest, Hangout Festival, and Wakarusa. Peep the full tour schedule just beneath the album tracklist.
