Video: Cheyenne Marie Mize performs “Keep It” (CoS Premiere)

Louisville’s Cheyenne Marie Mize is not unlike other singer-songwriters: her music is folk-y and earnest, she offers up heartfelt confessions like she was giving driving directions, and she is often seen with a guitar. But when Mize hits the stage, she separates herself from the pack thanks to performances that bubble over with unspoken prowess.

Such an example can be found in Mize’s recently-filmed Butchertown Pub Session, a video performance series shot in her hometown. Below, you can watch her unfurl “Keep It” from her new EP We Don’t Need. With pounding drums and a revival-esque piano line keeping time, Mize’s vocal performance belied her tensely shut eyes, beaming with oodles of power and a kind of uncomplicated disregard. Such vocal skill emanating from a mild-mannered woman may seem unlikely, but that only goes to show the power of live music.

We Don’t Need is out now via Yep Roc Records. Mize will be on tour this spring, with the full schedule below.
