Funerals are a time to grieve and commemorate someone’s life. Nothing could be further from the truth in The Shins’ video for “Simple Song”. In the DANIELS-directed clip, frontman James Mercer (looking grey and distinguished) plays a recently deceased father, whose videotaped will sends his adult children (played fittingly enough by the rest of the band) on a frantic search through the house. As they duke it out floor by floor, Mercer’s clan relives terrible memories of birthday parties and Christmas celebrations. While the ending is without even a shred of happiness, it’s hard not to feel slightly joyous for Mr. Mercer and his final act of revenge. Watch/download it now on iTunes.
