You might know singer-songwriter Laura Pergolizzi, who performs and records as LP, from the background music on that Citibank commercial. Maybe you know her from the songwriting credits for this Rihanna song or even her contribution to the Burlesque soundtrack. But it’s about time you knew LP from her impressive solo material, which sparked a bidding war a few years ago and recently nailed her a contract with Warner Bros. Records. As previously reported, the label will release her collection of live recordings, Into the Wild: Live At EastWest Studios, later this April, with a full-length expected later this year.
In the meantime, LP has released a video of her performing a stirring rendition of “Into the Wild” on the streets of Austin during last month’s SXSW. At first, she looks somewhat vulnerable standing there in the middle of Sixth Street with just her Ray-Bans, ukulele, and mop of curls, but then her powerfully wailed verses and whistling skills start to command the rapt attention of passersby. After a performance like that, and her audience’s encouraging “Yeah!”‘s, it’s hard to believe when she says in the video’s intro, “I never know what people are thinking when I’m performing.” Check it out for yourself below.
“Into the Wild” is available for download on iTunes, and you can pre-order the live CD/DVD Into the Wild: Live at EastWest Studios on Amazon.
