Hear a rare studio demo of The Sex Pistols Belsen Was a Gas

With the 35th anniversary box set of Never Mind the Bollocks set for month’s end, rare and unreleased material is starting to surface from The Sex Pistols camp. One such recording is a studio demo of the Sid Vicious-penned tune, ”Belsen Was a Gas”.

As Rolling Stone reports, the controversial track’s title is a reference to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and possibly dates back to Vicious’ work before the Pistols. Until now, the only known recordings had featured Ronald Arthur “Ronnie” Biggs on vocals.

This particular grimy, reverb-laden recording, however, was captured in the Pistols’ rehearsal room on Denmark Street and places frontman Johnny Rotten at the mic. Stream it below.

Never Mind the Bollocks will return to stores as a 35th anniversary box set on September 24th via Universal Music. The three-disc set is highlighted by the inclusion of the album’s original master tapes from 1977.
