Fiona Apple will write a song for Judd Apatow. Well, not him specifically, but his latest film: This Is 40. The Paul Rudd-starring followup to 2007′s blockbuster comedy Knocked Up will receive an original composition from the acclaimed songwriter titled, “Dull Tool”.
As Rolling Stone points out, this marks Apple’s first original piece of music written for a film, making her eligible for an Academy Award nomination. However, this isn’t the first time her vocals have graced the silver screen; she previously soundtracked 1998′s Pleasantville with her heart smelting rendition of The Beatles’ “Across the Universe” and just last year “Paper Bag” appeared in Bridesmaids.
There’s a likely reason she’s been tapped (other than, you know, that she’s a great songwriter and all). Her fellow collaborator and producer Jon Brion is behind the film’s soundtrack, which you can already preview at Universal Pictures’ Academy Awards consideration site.
This Is 40 hits theaters December 21st and contains a lot of jokes about, you guessed it, turning 40. Stream the very funny trailer below. Meanwhile, as you wait for the new track, grab her CoS Top Star-earning LP, The Idler Wheel…, now via Epic.
