“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka
Bat For Lashes – “All Your Gold”
I’ve spent many nights hanging out on the beach with past girlfriends. I’ve yet to share the sand with Natasha Kahn — clearly I haven’t lived yet.
Ben Sollee’s Backyard Brunch Session
Biscuits ‘n’ Ben. What more do you want?
Divine Fits – “Would That Not Be Nice”
It’s wild what darkness, a little pink light, and stock footage of floods can do for your vi–wait, what the hell is going on here?
Killer Mike – “Reagan”
Leave it to Killer Mike to make politics intensely creative. No joke, every frame here counts, and while things get more and more intense, not once does it stop being beautiful. It’s creepy in all the right ways.
Menomena – “Plumage”
Whereas Killer Mike’s video hits the jugular, Menomena mines the yucks here. Trevor McMahan’s direction is near flawless — at least by music video standards — and what makes this one so great is the fine pairing of “good idea” and “great execution.”
Miguel – “Do You”
Some videos define artists, offering quick ‘n’ easy characterization, and that’s exactly what this video does. I mean, gimme a fuckin’ break: Who doesn’t want to have a drink and play pool with this guy?
Nas feat. Amy Winehouse – “Cherry Wine”
He brought back Amy Winehouse. ‘Nuff said.
The Orwells – “Halloween All Year”
Here’s one video that probably should’ve gotten a little more literal with its title. Still, the confetti and those shots make up for the lack of pumpkins, candy corn, and gh-gh-gh-ghosts.
“Is The 2nd Law scientifically accurate?”
Sami returns to college.
Solange Knowles – “Losing You”
Cape Town’s Le Sapeur Society (Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance) looks like something out of a Roald Dahl novel. Where do we sign up?
