Chalk up yet another accolade for Adele’s 21. As Billboard reports, the album recently reached ‘Diamond’ status after surpassing 10 million copies sold in the U.S. Appropriately, it’s the 21st album to reach such distinction since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.
If that weren’t enough, 21 is only one of eight albums to hit the 10 million mark within two years of release. The only others to do so were ‘N SYNC’s No Strings Attached; Backstreet Boys’ Millennium; Santana’s Supernatural; Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill; The Bodyguard soundtrack; Creed’s Human Clay; and Shania Twain’s Come On Over.
If you’re wondering, the highest selling album since 1991 is Metallica’s self-titled 1991 release, which has moved 15.8 million copies. Come On Over, Jagged Little Pill, Millennium, and The Beatles’ 1 round out the top five.
