New Music: Sufjan Stevens The Star Spangled Banner

While some rockers celebrated Election Day with cheesy Instagram photos, Sufjan Stevens decided to commemorate this great democratic occasion with his rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner”. In Stevens’ hands, the already-epic tune becomes grander, with Stevens unfurling his evocative whisper over layers of orchestral horns and drums and child-like backing harmonies. Stream it below.

And in case anyone’s all out of patriotic glory, Stevens also shared his cover of “Angels We Have Heard On High”, which one might assume will appear on his forthcoming Christmas box set Silver & Gold: Songs for Christmas, Vols. 6-10. As is the case with his other Xmas numbers, it’s jam-packed with yuletide whimsy courtesy of the light plucking of strings and heaps of sleigh bells. Stream it below.

Silver & Gold: Songs for Christmas, Vols. 6-10 is due out November 13th via Stevens’ own Asthmatic Kitty.

Wow, I’m guessing that like so many of the “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one” crowd, Mr Stevens never served the needs of the many in uniform by defending the Star Spangled Banner he craps all over with this noise…right?
