Pussy Riot is among the nominees for TIME’s Person of the Year 2012. Earlier this year, three women of the Russian feminist collective were sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility” stemming from a protest at Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral. The collective were denouncing the ties between Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime and the Russian Orthodox Church. One woman, Yekaterina Samutsevich, has since been freed; however, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina remain in prison as of today.

Other nominees for TIME’s Person of the Year include President Barack Obama, South Korean pop sensation Psy, Michael Phelps, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. And just because he doesn’t have enough going for him, Jay-Z is also nominated. Click here to see the full list.

A winner will be revealed in TIME’s December 31st issue.
