On Tuesday night, Andrew Bird battled Hurricane Sandy by appearing at a crowd-less Late Show with David Letterman, delivering a fragile and intimate rendition of Townes Van Zandt’s “If I Needed You” amidst a most captivating backdrop. The music video for “Three White Horses” almost recreates that scenario, interspersing studio footage of Bird and a few collaborators with clips of wind blowing and birds flying in pattern. Only this time around, the music’s more than enough to overpower nature, building up in emotional intensity the way a tropical storm gains wind speed. The end result is a sound that’s more grand and forceful than Sandy or Tony or Valerie. Watch the force of nature in action below.

Bird’s second album of 2012, Hands of Glory, is out now via Mom+Pop.
