It’s been just over three weeks since Frankenstorm Sandy ravaged the North East, and many cities are still dealing with the devastation. The Gaslight Anthem’s home state of New Jersey was one of the hardest hit by the storm and they highlight the state’s ensuing struggles in their video for Handwritten track “National Anthem”. Tragic images of the storm’s destruction, including before-and-after shots of Seaside Heights pier and disturbing aerial images of towns, slowly fade in and out as Brian Fallon laments: “And I can’t stand the weather, no I never liked the rain.”
The clip is part of the band’s ongoing relief efforts through Punkcares.org, where they’re selling exclusive merchandise with profits going to rebuilding efforts. The Gaslight Anthem join a growing list of artists joining the cause, including Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West, and Roger Waters; Gary Clark, Jr., Bline-182, and Deen Ween; and Vampire Weekend, Dirty Projectors, and Real Estate.
