Beginning tomorrow, fans will be able to bid on exclusive vinyl editions of The Replacements’ reunion EP, Songs For Slim, as part of an auction benefiting the band’s Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke in February. But as former Replacements manager Peter Jesperson has revealed to Consequence of Sound, the exclusive releases won’t end there.
Frank Black, The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn, Deer Tick, Jakob Dylan, The Jayhawks, Lucero, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, and more have recorded covers of Dunlap’s various solo material, which will be auctioned monthly as limited-edition split 7″ singles.
“We’re planning on doing these once a month,” Jesperson told Consequence of Sound. “The Replacements EP goes up for auction on Tuesday, January 15th. The first 7” 45 will go up for auction on the 15th of February; the second 7” will go up for auction in March, etc. So, it’ll be an ongoing thing. Once the auctions close, we’ll put up the tracks digitally, so they’ll be available for people to buy as a single, or a la carte, if they prefer.”
Check back tomorrow for our full interview with Jesperson, which includes an update on Dunlap’s health, an inside report on the Replacements’ recording sessions, and an in-depth discussion on the history of Twin/Tone and New West Records.
