My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James was inspired to write his debut solo album Regions of Light and Sound of God thanks in large part to Lynd Ward’s 1929 graphic novel God’s Man, which “chronicles an artist’s struggles with temptation and corruption, along with finding true love.”
The album’s latest track “A New Life” draws from a particular tale in the book which parallels closely to an experience in James’ own life. As he explained to RollingStone.com:
“There’s a scene [in Regions of Light and Sound of God] where the main character’s like chased out of town and he falls off a cliff and is lost and kind of injured and this woman finds him and nurses him back to health and they fall in love. And they have a child together and they have this new life that’s kind of coming. That had happened to me. Like, I had fallen offstage and gotten injured and gotten super dark and fell in love and all that was happening at the same time I was loving this book. It was like I had this beautiful illustration of what was happening in my life.”
The track is streaming in full at RollingStone.com. The lead single “Know Til Now”, meanwhile, is streaming below.
Regions of Light and Sound of God arrives February 5th via ATO Records, and pre-orders are ongoing.
