As previously reported, super producer Dan the Automator and multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells have teamed under the moniker Pillowfight and will release their self-titled collaborative debut on January 22nd. Our first taste of the Bulk Recordings/EMI release came from the blaring pop sensibilities of “Get Your Shit Together”, and it was instantly evident that Dan and Wells go together like French roast coffee and Nat Shermans.
The latest single and lead track from the new record, “Used to Think”, is another irresistible example of this project’s potential. It’s a sound that comes from a Prohibition era-style speakeasy, where Wells’ voice effortlessly fills the room with sultry blue smoke. Behind her, the Phantom of the Opera plays a synthesized organ and Kid Koala scratches the one’s-and-two’s. Though the song cuts out on the lyrics “time for this chapter to end,” it’s clear this Pillowfight is just getting started. Hit play below and watch those feathers fly.
Pillowfight is due out January 22nd on Bulk Recordings/EMI, and you can pre-order it here.
