Brooklyn alt-rockers Midnight Spin are playing a record release show for their debut LP, Don’t Let Me Sleep, tonight at NYC’s Mercury Lounge. For those who can’t be in attendance, the band is offering up an exclusive stream of the 12-track effort, which you can listen to below.
Midnight Spin began in 2008 when middle school friends drummer Danny Scull and guitarist/vocalist Mike Corbett relocated from DC to BK. There, “fate and chaos” led them to bassist Ben Waters and guitarist Jim Terranova. Jeremy Cohen brought his keyboard down from Boston, and the band was off and running. Together, the quintet takes a love for 90s alternative rock and the relentless energy of punk to put forth rock ‘n’ roll that pumps in the veins and sticks in the brain.
Everything about the band – even their name and the album title – speaks to late nights of blurred revelry. In fact, much of the Justin Gerrish-produced record is the result of such nights. “Lion Run” came after a late night walk Scull and Corbett took “from the East Village to Central Park in the February freezing cold.” The title track was written at 3 A.M. after strolling across the Williamsburg Bridge. The last vocals recorded for the album came from an email Scull sent after three straight sleepless nights. Standout cuts like “Reagan Babies”, “Conchis Bliss”, and “Neuroin”, with their deep hooks and winning melodies, will keep listeners moving just as long.
