Similar to our weekly collection of MP3s, we decided to start ranking each week’s best videos. So, from here on out, our favorite weekly videos will be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who reigns champ this week? Grab some trail mix, sit back, and find out.
10. King Krule – “Octopus”
This is as dark and gritty as you will ever see this otherwise neat and nimble youngster. Here’s to hoping we hear more from King Krule in 2013.
09. Cities Aviv – “POWER EXCHANGE”
Memphis rapper Cities Aviv makes 90′s nostalgia and overblown Photobooth filters cool again in this clip for “POWER EXCHANGE”.
08. Wild Smiles – “Tangled Hair”
These Hampshire youngsters might not have a knack for videography, but their nonchalant garage rock aesthetics have us pining for more material after this debut single.
07. Nightlands – “I Fell in Love With a Feeling”
I still don’t understand how one man could be so obsessed with silver. But I guess if you were able to manipulate it with your mind, making pools levitate from the ground and spin in circles it might be a more interesting substance.
06. The Growlers – “Salt on a Slug” (NSFW)
In this strictly canonical video for “Salt on a Slug”, The Growlers take advantage of the wealth of found footage and public domain material available to them, in turn managing to make these clip-repetitive videos worth watching again.
05. Niagara – “Seal”
Watch as these two magnificent songwriters fly by the seat of their pants from scene to scene in this clip for “Seal”. Also, the guy in goldface is totally controversial.
04. Iceage – “Ecstacy”
There’s something about a Danish house party where Iceage soundtracks the evening that just sounds equal parts terrifying and beguiling. Sex, drugs, and rock & roll indeed. You’re Nothing is out February 19th on Matador.
03. Crystal Castles – “Sad Eyes”
Strobe lights, fleeting glances from Alice Glass, bizarre imagery: it’s a Crystal Castles video if there ever was one. But hey, we’re not bored of it yet. III is out now.
02. Foals – “My Number”
To the guy who passed out at a Foals concert: you’ve got some explaining to do. This video for “My Number” doesn’t reinvent the concert-as-music-video genre, but it does do a fine job of showcasing the track and the band’s energetic stage presence.
01. Heems – “Soup Boys”
You’re right, Heems, chocolate chip cookie dough in a sugar cone is my favorite kind of ice cream. As if you expected anything less from the former Das Racist member, this clip for “Soup Boys” is absolutely bonkers, like an out of control student video project gone wrong in all the right ways.
