Azealia Banks must love The Strokes’ 2001 debut, Is This It, as much as we do. She’s just dropped a cover of the album’s early driver “Barely Legal” on New Zealand’s George FM, and the end result is pretty impressive. Producer Lindbergh Palace strips away the track’s trademark quacking guitars, teethy percussion, and coffee-hungry vocals for puddles of synths, syrupy bass, and Azealia’s lush singing (!). In hindsight, it’s more akin to what Julian Casablancas might throw on a solo album these days. Stream below.
As announced on Facebook today, Banks will release a new single titled, “Yung Rapunzel”, on March 26th. Produced by Lil Internet, Banks calls it a ”dark, twisted sister song to ’212′.” It should also be noted she’s hit the studio with Ariel Pink. Busy days, busy days.
