Here’s a question for your next late-night game of Trivia Pursuit: What was Michael Stipe’s first recording following the demise of R.E.M.? The answer is a pirate shanty — yes, pirate shanty — with Courtney Love (!) titled, “Rio Grande”.
The track is of one several star-studded collaborations appearing on the new compilation Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, which was curated by Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski, and producer Hal Willner. Other contributing musicians include Tom Waits and Keith Richards (who team up for “Shenandoah”), Broken Social Scene, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, and more.
Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys is due out February 19th via ANTI-, but you can stream the whole thing at NPR.org.
