For those of you that didn’t nab one of the 250 Songs for Slim benefit EPs last month, here’s some good news: The Replacements will release the five-track compilation digitally on March 5th and as a 12″ vinyl on April 16th. And yes, once again, all proceeds will go on to benefit former Mats guitarist Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke last year.
In anticipation of the EP’s release, they’ve leaked their cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “I’m Not Sayin’”. As expected, it’s a scratchy, lo-fi three minutes that’s a slight upgrade on Paul Westerberg’s more recent solo output. “I can’t give my heart to you / I’ll tell you that I’ll sing your name,” Westerberg yelps, cracking his voice a bit, which will no doubt draw smiles from his earliest fans. Stream it below and then grab a cold one.
In related news, we recently spoke with Peter Jesperson prior to the auctions. The former Replacements manager gave us an update on Dunlap’s health, an inside report on the Replacements’ recording sessions, and an in-depth discussion on the history of Twin/Tone and New West Records.
