Los Angeles singer-songwriter Hanni El Khatib may not be a household name, but 114 million Americans heard his song “Can’t Win Em All” when it appeared in Audi’s Super Bowl commercial. In April, Khatib’s stock is bound to rise even further with the release of his Dan Auerbach-produced sophomore album, Head In The Dirt.

The followup to 2011’s excellent Will The Guns Come Out was born out of a chance meeting with The Black Key in a Parisian bar. When Khatib got to Auerbach’s Nashville studio, he didn’t have the well-crafted demos of his debut, instead opting to “erase everything he’d become comfortable with and to make an album out of only raw instinct and inspiration.” The resulting 11-track LP sees Khatib make “the entire history of rebel music something all his own,” referencing ’50s blues, the Stooges, Black Sabbath, the Clash, the Equals, and more.

Lead single “Family” definitely has roots in each of the above. Though the shredding guitar and machine gun-style drums may be reminiscent of Auberach’s beloved band, Khatib infuses the song with his unique swagger and sense of abandonment. “This was one of those songs that we just hit record and ripped right through,” Khatib told Rolling Stone. “We had everyone in the room at once and just went for it. It was really loud in there. Those types of songs are the most fun to do.” Stream it below.

Head In The Dirt hits stores April 30th via Innovative Leisure. In support of the LP, Khatib will be on tour this Spring, supporting the Cold War Kids alongside appearances at SXSW and Coachella. Consult the full docket following the album’s tracklist.
