File this one under “the more you know”: Phoenix’s forthcoming fifth studio album, Bankrupt!, was mixed on the same Harrison 4032 solid-state recording console that captured Michael Jackson’s all-time classic, Thriller.
As The New Yorker reports (via Pitchfork), the console surfaced on eBay, where guitarist Lauren Brancowitz scoped it out for the band. What’s weird is that it belonged to Clayton Rose, owner of a Christian music studio out in Fullerton, California. As frontman Thomas Mars told the publication, “There was something a little spooky about him [Rose]. He was very pushy. It seemed like a scam.”
Following a number of e-mails, Mars picked it up for a whopping $17,000, an outright bargain from the original asking price of $32,000. Soon after, the 1100 pound console was shipped to Paris, where they mixed Bankrupt!, which at the time was tentatively titled, Alternative Thriller. Yes, that most certainly deserves an instant rim shot.
Bankrupt! is due out in April via Glassnote Records. As previously reported, the band will be touring behind their new album.
