Miracles of Modern Science, the Brooklyn quintet who changed how we look at Bon Iver and Bon Jovi, warped perspectives on how orchestral string instruments can be utilized with their 2011 full-length debut, Dog Year. It was easily one of the most unique indie releases of the year, and now the band returns with its followup EP, MEEMS.

Self-produced and recorded in the band’s “favorite studio,” Brooklyn’s Spaceman Sound, MEEMS  features four new songs and two instrumentals. Quirky titles like “Ahem” belie fascinating structures and lyrics regarding personal falling-out-of-love stories – i.e., those things you see throughout indie music in a completely new package. Plenty have ruminated on the struggles of being unambitious, but not with the head-turning string movements and wit of “Dear Pressure”

MOMS also remain playful, pressing their tongues firmly into their cheeks with outrageous lyricism, as in “The Singularity” (“let the nanobots swim through our brains / to keep our neurons sharp and clean”), and whimsical instrumentation, like the 19-second inhale-exhale of “Breather” or the build and release of “Physics is Our Business”. Musical grace is never sacrificed for waggishness, nor the other way around, and that balance keeps Miracles of Modern Science captivating and refreshing.

MEEMS will surface on February 19th (pre-orders going on at Bandcamp), but you can stream the EP below right now. Come March, the band will embark on their biggest tour yet, so be sure to check those dates out underneath the stream.

I kind of hate most ‘indie rock,’ but this is just a beautiful EP — genre is of no consequence here.
