Similar to our weekly collection of MP3s, we decided to start ranking each week’s best videos. So, from here on out, our favorite weekly videos will be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who reigns champ this week? Grab some popcorn, sit back, and find out.
10. The xx – “I Miss You” (Beyonce Cover)
Turns out everybody has Beyoncé on the mind. The clip is standard fair for a live in studio video, but the energy and looks exchanged between Romy Croft and Oliver Sim perfectly encapsulate what makes The xx so sexy and mysterious.
09. MØ – “Glass”
Danish electro-pop breakthrough MØ takes her lyric “Wanna be free! Wanna be free! Wanna get it!” to its literal conclusion in this clip for “Glass”. It’s your general youthful carelessness, mixed with a side of faux-Marilyn Manson, and shots of hot dog packages.
08. Kurt Vile – “Wakin on a Pretty Day”
Watch as Kurt Vile’s elaborate street art comes to life in this clip for his new single “Wakin on a Pretty Day”, taken from the forthcoming album Wakin on a Pretty Daze, out April 9th via Matador.
07. Jim James – “A New Life”
My Morning Jacket’s Jim James obviously missed the memo to take heed of opening old brown doors in dark rooms. Because, you know, that’s where the buffalo people live. Read about real life-related Jim James news in our newest cover story.
06. Wild Nothing – “Only Heather”
Well, this is certainly a new twist on the whole Sword in the Stone scenario.
If you think live recordings of Home Shopping Network or QVC style shows are awkward, or maybe just boring, then have a look at this horrifying by way of hilarious clip from Pissed Jeans. “Bathroom Laugher” is off of their newest album, Honeys, which we liked very much.
03. Local Natives – “Heavy Feet”
Who knew that blind men flying model airplanes could have such a profound effect on my tear ducts, but that’s exactly what happens in Local Natives‘ clip for “Heavy Feet.” If you missed our cover story on the group, now is a good time to catch up.
02. James Blake – “Retrograde”
What’s remarkably stunning about the video for “Retrograde” are the parts James Blake doesn’t let on about. Though it’s obvious a sort of extraterrestrial body is at work, there’s mystery and intrigue abound as the masked motorcycle rider recalls a certain mystique from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Overgrown is out April 9th through Republic Records.
01. Justin Timberlake – “Suit & Tie”
In this David Fincher-directed clip, Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z command a ballroom full over eager fans, get massages, and just generally run the show. It’s kind of how I imagine every day of their real life; a glamorous, luxurious affair. The black and white aesthetics paired with such dramatic shadows make for an intimidating setting, and one that ultimately makes for our video of the week.
