Similar to our weekly collection of MP3s, we decided to start ranking each week’s best videos. So, from here on out, our favorite weekly videos will be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who reigns champ this week? Grab some candy, sit back, and find out.
10. Companion – “Only”
In nearly a single take, Companion transform an empty beach into a kaleidoscopic vision of dancing ladies and twirling fabric. The video is nearly as idyllic as the guitar-driven melody, an ocean-sized void filled with brilliant rhythms and beautiful people.
09. TOPS – “Evening”
Another day, another found footage video. This time, TOPS combine what looks like grainy security camera footage and a floating head to create a newsreel-worthy video about, well, nothing really.
08. Josef Salvat – “This Life”
A time traveling clip set to mirror the story of Josef Salvat’s gorgeous new single, “This Life” is as timeless as the Porsche 911 Salvat drives around.
07. Ex Cops – “Separator”
Fascinating how a simple night out manifests into something so exhausting to watch. Maybe it’s the long Brooklyn faces or the endless bike rides over the bridge, but Ex Cops’ brand of meandering pop rock makes the perfect soundtrack to an emotional night.
06. Benoit Poulard – “Margin”
Day jobs, am I right?
05. Liars – “WIXIW”
Liars frontman Angus Andrew is nothing if not good at perpetuating stereotypes. This black and white slow motion clip is somehow more intense than a feature length drama.
04. Frightened Rabbit – “Today’s Cross”
At least he didn’t start eating his own hair. After seeing that one show on TLC I sort of assume every board person with long hair gnaws on their mane.
03. Hundred Waters – “Boreal”
Hundred Waters’ debut record was a terrific surprise, and in the video for “Boreal” these Florida rockers have a terrifying new spin on what Big Foot has been up to all these years.
02. Beach House – “Forever Still”
Though not technically a music video, it’s a video with music. And that’s good enough for me. “Forever Still” is a short film set to four different Bloom tracks. Shot near their Tornillo, Texas studio, watch as the gorgeous sunrise and sunset bookend this terrific clip.
01. UMO – “So Good At Being In Trouble”
If nothing else, this Danny Perez-directed and Christopher Mintz-Plasse featuring video should indicate just how far Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s career have come in a few short years. This psychedelic, drug-fueled clip for their stunning track “So Good At Being In Trouble” easily takes home video of the week honors.
