Not to over editorialize, but covering The Clash should be like the bar exam for punk bands: if they can’t do it, then it’s time to consider a career change. Luckily, Brooklyn’s The So So Glos passed this test with flying colors when they covered “City of the Dead” at a January 29th benefit concert for Strummerville, the Joe Strummer Foundation for New Music. As far as homages go, the band found a balance between the gritty original and their more pop-punk leanings, only slightly tweaking the speed and pacing, while looking like they’re having an absolute blast the whole time.
