Portland is one of indie music’s hottest hot beds, with all sorts of genre favorites and genre-benders sprouting from city. Experimental pop outfit BRAINSTORM takes some of the best ideas of the region – from YACHT’s playfulness, to Menomena’s loaded layers, to STRFKR’s dance-ability – and blends it all together in their neural whirlwind. By sliding in their personal penchant for African guitar structures, the trio creates a sound that’s at once comfortably familiar and refreshingly fun.
Case in point: “Black to Bright”, the b-side to their latest single “She Moves”, is a bubbling number that beckons your cares to melt away. In fact, as the guitar shimmers away and the drums blithely sashay, the chorus’ lyrics tell you to do just that: “Let it go / toss it into space / throw it down, down / to a distant place.” This weekend officially marks the return of spring, and this track is an excellent way to greet the season. Open up those curtains, let the light shine in, and enjoy.
