After weeks of battling various health issues, Morrissey has waved the white flag and canceled his remaining North American tour dates. Citing an “ongoing medical condition,” which began with a bleeding ulcer and Barrett’s esophagus and recently grew to include double pneumonia, the singer has decided not to continue on with 22 planned dates across the U.S.

According to an official statement, “Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour. Morrissey thanks all of his fans for their well wishes and thoughts.”

Update: Per a new statement posted on Morrissey fan site True to You, “there are no plans to continue with the present U.S. tour… and dates will not be rescheduled.” Morrissey also offered his own statement:

“It takes a lifetime to find the right words, and at the moment, I haven’t got them. I’ve been a colossal pain where this continuously unpredictable illness is concerned, and now the physical limits have been reached. The tour had, in fact, been fantastic for all of us – a new slice of life full of concentrated power. The audiences everywhere have given so much, although I know that neither of us will ever receive our due. I hope this isn’t the end, and I hope there will be other chances, minus the heavy burden of illness. Knots of grief today, but full of resolve for tomorrow.”

Following his initial health issues, Morrissey postponed some 19 tour dates. Though things appeared back on track late last month with a rescheduled and expanded itinerary, the singer then canceled shows in San Francisco and Mexico City earlier this week, which leads us to today.

For a little Morrissey that can never go away, be sure to spin “I Like You” while reading our recent feature on Morrissey, which collects a bunch of his best quotes ordered in various categories (e.g., style, celibacy, himself, The Smiths, and more.).
