Only a few months after issuing their fifth album, Book Burner, Virginia grindcore outfit Pig Destroyer return with a previously unheard EP titled, Mass & Volume. The two-track collection, which clocks in at nearly 30 minutes, is dedicated to the memory of Pat Egan, a highly-esteemed and committed core member of the band’s longtime label, Relapse Records.
“Pat Egan was a friend and a keystone member of the Relapse family for many of the years we have been involved with it,” Pig Destroyer said in a statement. ”He devoted his life to supporting underground music and he immeasurably helped develop the bands he worked with. His untimely passing on February 18, 2013 shocked the many people that his life and work had touched.”
Written and recorded on the last day of studio sessions for 2007’s Phantom Limb, the material was eventually shelved — though according to a press release, the two tracks act as “a great epilogue to that particular era of the band.” All proceeds from the EP will be donated to a college fund for Egan’s daughter, Katie. In related news, Relapse Records recently released a tributary 20-track compilation titled Patlapse, featuring some of Egan’s favorite artists like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, and even a never-before-released track from Exhumed. All proceeds, too, will go towards the college fund for Katie.
