The Beach Boys will, sadly, go on with only frontman Mike Love and co-conspirator Bruce Johnston, as previously reported. Yet that hasn’t stalled Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, or David Marks. It would appear that the three former members will follow up last year’s wildly successful 50th Anniversary Tour with a show of their own.

So far, there’s only two dates: July 25th at Fraze Pavilion in Kettering, Ohio, and July 26th at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, IL.

So what’s the deal? Recently, Jardine spoke with Montgomery Media, where he spoke about collaborating with Wilson, and how the three of them “want to get out.” He expressed some dissatisfaction with Love’s plans, though remained positive at the future of The Beach Boys, adding that he hopes “we’ll do it again next year.”

Needless to say, stay tuned.

“Brian IS the Beach Boys. He is the band . We’re his messengers. ”

This is sort of reminiscent of Pink Floyd vs. Roger Waters tours in the late 1980s. Waters wrote a significant amount of the music but formally quit the band, However Gilmour and company were still legally a part of the “Pink Floyd” brand name and continued to play that music. Gilmour and company accured huge profits using the brand name Pink Floyd as a touring vehicle, while Waters struggled to fill seats as a solo artist in less desirable venues.

This situation with The Beach Boys is different. Brian Wilson never quit or resigned from the Beach Boys in a corporate sense. He’s still very much part of that structure. Love applied and was granted from Brother Inc. (The Beach Boys’ corporation) the license to tour with the brand name “Beach Boys”. This was a point of contention between Love and Jardine years back because Jardine used “Beach Boys” as part of his touring vehicle. That went to court and Love won.

That being said, Love has always and still is prioritizing profit over artistry. He offers an entertaining show that fits an audience with simple requirements: an oldies act catered to the baby boomers- an escape to a less complicated time.

Wilson on the other hand is regarded as a pop genius and musical treasure. To see him in a live venue is equivalent to witnessing history. His audience knows the narrative behind his professional and personal life story. They regard him as an artist, not an entertainer. He doesn’t need The Beach Boys to fill seats, indentical to why John Fogerty or Mark Knopfler don’t require thier respective band brands.

In a nutshell, If you want entertainment see The Beach Boys with Mike Love, If you want to appreciate artistry and experience the joy of music in general, See Brian Wilson and his friends. Hell, if you’re affluent enough, see both.

Jeffrey Foskett tours with Brian Wilson — I saw the group sans Mike and Bruce for the Christmas show and they sounded great. Brian, Al and David will be touring in California in October 2013!!
