Cold War Kids will release their fourth studio album, Dear Miss Lonely Hearts, on April 2nd via Downtown Records. With the addition of former Modest Mouse guitarist Dann Gallucci and producer Lars Stalfors (The Mars Volta, Matt & Kim) behind the boards, the bluesy rockers sought to let their sound go further than ever before. Earlier this month, they demonstrated some of that aural expansion at a special show for Southern California’s NPR affiliate, KCRW.
One cut on display, “Loner Phase”, is chock-full of classic CWK. While bobbing basslines and snappy drums line the track up nicely with the band’s earlier work, there are distinct signs of the aforementioned growth. For one, lead singer Nathan Willett’s identifiable vibrato, more confident than ever, takes dips and turns unheard on previous efforts. Gallucci’s contribution is similarly apparent, his guitar sounding more like a echo-y synth booming from a church hall.
You can check out the performance in multi-camera HD below. Audio of the full KCRW set will air on Friday March 22nd at 11:15 am, and then live online at the station’s website.
