Way back in 2006, before they were employee and employer, Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) and Kanye West collaborated on a track called “The Light Is Not Afraid of The Dark” during the sessions for Mos Def’s third album, True Magic. While the track was ultimately shelved, its studio version has the web just weeks after Bey debuted it during a gig at Chicago’s The Shrine.

With West’s production work focused on a hypnotic concoction of funky bass, pounding drums, and a little electric piano, Bey/Def delivers inspirational lines like “Who hear me?/Put simply, I’ll kill your confusion and help build your movement/The skill in the world to do what goes unproven.” Take a listen at Okayplayer.
