On July 16th, Los Angeles composer Chris Schlarb will deliver his third solo album, Psychic Temple II, on Asthmatic Kitty. The follow-up to 2010’s Psychic Temple includes his cover of The Beach Boys’ 1971 Surf’s Up track “‘Til I Die”, where he’s joined by an eclectic cast of musicians: Sufjan Stevens, Castanets’ Ray Raposa, and Cryptacize’s Nedelle Torrisi on vocals, and the Mars Volta’s Ikey Owens on the organ. Listen to the warbling rendition below.

I appreciate someone doing a different take on this great song (and for not just covering God Only Knows like everyone else). I also understand that since nobody can top the Beach Boys vocally, its sometimes better to go the opposite direction. But to me, these kind of deathbed vocals go too far and distract from the song. And actually, its a fairly obvious take on the song. The lyrics are already desolate, so why sing desolate? Brian Wilson’s genius was in making such a sad lyric sound beautiful.
