mgmt MGMT announce new album, due out in September

At last, MGMT have the announced the release of their self-titled third studio album, due out September 17th through Columbia Records. It serves as the proper follow-up to 2010′s Congratulations.

According to Pitchfork, the album spans 10 tracks, kicking off with “Alien Days”, which was originally released for Record Store Day 2013. Two other songs, “Mystery Disease” and “Your Life Is a Lie”, have been performed live.

Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasse recorded the album in Upstate New York with producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev), who called the process “really strange,” involving several improvisational jams that would last for hours. Influences ranged from Aphex Twin to house music.

“We’re not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it,” Goldwasser explained to Rolling Stone.

The album will be accompanied by The Optimizer, “unique visual elements to accompany and illustrate the new music, which provide listeners of the album “with a simultaneous aural and optical listening experience featuring video and CGI work.”

The band plans to support the album’s release with a series of music videos and tour dates. Check out their current tour schedule below.
