Paul McCartney has been a vocal supporter of Russian feminist collective Pussy Riot. Last month, he wrote an open letter in which he called on the Russian government to release Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova from prison. The two women are currently serving a two-year prison sentence in Russia after being found guilty of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility” stemming from a protest at Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral.

During his headlining set at Bonnaroo last night, McCartney again showed his support for Pussy Riot, flashing “Free Pussy Riot” on the video screen as he performed “Back in the USSR”. Watch footage of the moment below.

He also talked about it onstage. So I got to hear Paul McCartney say “pussy”. Twice!
