EMI has announced the next release as part of its extensive reissue campaign of The Smashing Pumpkins’ pre-Oceania discography. Following similar re-releases for Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, an expanded version of the band’s 1996 box set The Aeroplane Flies High will available on July 23rd.
In addition to the original 33 tracks fully remastered, featuring expanded versions of singles from Mellon Collie, the tracklist tacks on 90 (!) unreleased demos, alternate versions, and live recordings. What’s more, a sixth disc contains a live recording from the Mellon Collie tour in 1996, while the accompanying DVD chronicles a July 4th, 1997 performance in France. Finally, the box set contains a 46-page book and liner notes written by music critic David Wild, track-by-track notes written by frontman Billy Corgan, and all the content is housed in unique packaging with embossed foil wrap.
The box set will be reissued as a 6xCD/DVD, 5xLP, and deluxe and standard digital editions. The full tracklist is available at the band’s website.
Along with the reissue, the band has confirmed plans for a new studio album, which they’ll soon begin recording.
