Because the musical collaborations he pulled off at Bonnaroo weren’t enough, Jim James reunited with The Roots on Tuesday night in Brooklyn. As part of the Celebrate Brooklyn concert series, the My Morning Jacket frontman and Legendary Roots Crew each performed their own sets at the Prospect Park Bandshell before joining forces for a four-song encore (if James’ last words on stage are to be believed, they had planned on going longer!)
The long–time collaborators performed covers of John Lennon’s “Instant Karma”, Bill Withers’ “Use Me” (both of which were performed at ‘Roo’s SuperJam), and Prince’s “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man”, as well as their joint re-working of the Monsters of Folk track “Dear God 2.0” off How I Got Over. You can watch fan-shot footage of all four performances below (thanks to YouTube user/MMJ fanatic dillsnufus).
