Along with plenty of awkward laughs and pun-tastic burgers (we would eat the “Mission A-Corn-Plished”), Bob’s Burgers occasionally serves up “Bob’s Buskers”, where prominent musicians cover various songs from the shows run. St. Vincent’s Annie Clark already got her punk-rock on with “Bad Tina”, and now Stephin Merritt joins forces with writer/performer Kenny Mellman to cover “Electric Love” from the Season 3 episode “Topsy”.
Now, try your best to follow along: Merritt plays the role of the titular elephant Topsy to Mellman’s Thomas Edison, and together they perform a song wherein they dutifully confess their undying love for one another. I’ll repeat: the inventor of the light bulb and a tusked land mammal, as played by Merritt and Mellman respectively, fall in love and sing together in front of a Ferris wheel while surrounded by families. This, boys and girls, is proof positive that cartoons are clearly made for adults and not children.
