Green Day surprised plenty of London fans last night when they randomly decided to perform Dookie in its entirety at Brixton Academy. Following a performance of American Idiot‘s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong casually announced, ”So next year, in 2014, it’s gonna mark the 20 year anniversary of a record called Dookie. So right now we’re going to play the record all the way through.” He then proceeded to go from “Burnout” to “F.O.D.” in what amounted to a 30-song setlist.
As The A.V. Club points out, a dedicated and incredibly charitable fan captured the whole performance on camera, which you can now watch below. As I discussed in my review of their Chicago gig back in March, this is just the type of spontaneity that this band needs to keep up to string crusty old fans along. Not saying they need to pull out full albums each night, or do the whole nostalgic thing a la Weezer, but here’s hoping they keep throwing curve balls like this in the future. At the very least for 2014.
