Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic discuss Nirvana’s In Utero, play unreleased tracks

Nirvana 20th In Utero

This week, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic appeared on NPR’s All Songs Considered to promote the forthcoming 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana’s third and final studio album, In Utero. The two former members digressed at great lengths on the production of the album, specifically Steve Albini’s sound and recording in the chilly confines of the Midwest.

“If you’ve ever seen pictures of the studio or the house, I’m sure it’s a beautiful place to hang out in in the summertime,” Grohl waxed nostalgic about recording. “Unfortunately, we were there in February. It’s outside of Minneapolis. It was, like, subzero arctic temperature. But that room where we recorded the stuff, the room sounded great and it was a comfortable place to be. And I remember sitting at my drums and Kurt was to my left and Krist was to my right, and we had proper isolation and we would track live together.”

They also previewed the release with a rustic demo of “All Apologies”, Albini’s original mix for “Heart-Shaped Box”, an original version of “Serve the Servants”, and an unreleased track titled “Forgotten Tune”, of which they said:

“…we found it and were like, what is this song? And I don’t really remember,” Novoselic explained. “And [we were], like, what do you want to call it? And I’m like, I don’t want to give it a name, so let’s just call it ‘Forgotten Tune’ and let people make up their own minds what it is. But I remember the main riff in that tune was, like, from 1988 or something. Just trying to, like, bring back a riff. ‘All Apologies’ was from 1990, and ‘Dumb’ was a pre-Nevermind song. ‘Pennyroyal Tea,’ [Dave] and Kurt were getting crazy some night down in that apartment with a multi-track cassette recorder, and ‘Pennyroyal Tea’ came out of that. It’s just kind of, like, there were new songs we were trying to revisit, old ideas … ‘Forgotten Tune’ just represents that idea. ‘Let’s see if we can make something out of this.'”

Listen to the entire interview at NPR’s website, where you can also find standalone streams for “All Apologies”, “Heart-Shaped Box”, and “Serve the Servants” toward the bottom of the page. To hear “Forgotten Tune”, scroll to the 39:30 mark of the actual interview.

As previously reported, the reissue hits stores September 24th and will be available in various configurations including as 3CD/1DVD Super Deluxe set, which includes a full recording of the band’s “Live and Loud” concert at Seattle’s Pier 48 from December 13th 1993. The reissue will also be released as a 2-CD set and triple vinyl set, while the “Live and Loud” concert film will be available as a standalone DVD, as well.
