Sadly, David Bowie didn’t take home the Mercury Prize, but the evening wasn’t a total bust. During Wednesday night’s awards ceremony, the elusive auteur premiered a video for James Murphy’s remix of “Love is Lost”. Watch it below.
According to a press release, the video is a “strangely moving Gothic inflected story line perfect for Halloween.” Or, in other words, David Bowie, dressed as a combination witch/Lord Voldemort, creeping around his house with puppets. The puppets are from his personal collection, and one of them shares a striking resemblance to Bowie.
The whole thing was shot on home video and edited in Bowie’s Manhattan office, leaving the total cost of production at $12.99 (aka the price for the USB stick to download the finished video). Bowie is said to have thought of the idea last week and worked day and night until it was completed on Monday morning.
The The Next Day track was reworked into a 10-minute opus for The Next Day Extra, an expanded edition featuring five never-before-released tracks (four of which you can stream right now) and two remixes. Due November 5th, Extra also includes a DVD featuring the four music videos released supporting The Next Day. Pre-orders are ongoing.
