This week’s countdown is a real downer, anchored by a trio of steamy, sultry songs that juxtapose sexy sounds with brokenhearted lyricism. Such is the nature of tragic balladry. One of fall’s most eagerly anticipated hip-hop collaborations is included here, and even it succumbs to lovesickness. So, pour some wine, bite your lip, and click ahead. These songs hurt.
10. Action Bronson – “Practice”
Farewell, Allen Iverson. The former Philadelphia 76ers point guard, famous for his slick shooting, prescient assists, and off-court antics, retired from the NBA yesterday. As a tribute to Iverson’s stellar career, rapper Action Bronson teased “Practice”, a cut from his forthcoming Blue Chips 2 mixtape. Produced by Bronson’s frequent collaborator Party Supplies, the track opens with a snippet from Iverson’s infamous 2002 press conference (“We’re talking ’bout practice…“) before launching into a horn-driven beat. As braggadocious as the song’s tributee, Bronson — an avid chef — holds no remorse for his questionable diet: “Every meal I eat is steak/ Just to make a statement.” –Jon Hadusek
