Earlier this month, bassist Kim Shattuck unexpectedly announced her departure from Pixies
following a brief stint as Kim Deal’s replacement. In a new interview with NME, Shattuck explained she was fired by the band’s manager just a day after wishing her bandmates adieu following the last of their 2013 tour dates.

Shattuck said she was “shocked” by the band’s decision, as she had previously agreed to tour with them in 2014. “Everything had gone well, the reviews were all good and the fans were super-nice about everything. They were like, ‘We love you, New Kim!’ We said goodbye at the airport and the following morning the manager called me and said: ‘The band has made the decision to go with another bass player.'”

Asked to speculate on why she was fired, Shattuck replied: “I get the feeling they’re more introverted people than I am. Nobody really talked about deep issues, at least out loud. There was a show at the Mayan in Los Angeles where I got overly enthusiastic and jumped into the crowd, and I know they weren’t thrilled about that. When I got offstage the manager told me not to do that again. I said, ‘Really, for my own safety?’ And he said, ‘No, because the Pixies don’t do that.’

She concluded: “I would have preferred it if they told me face to face as a group, but they’re nice people.” It’s worth noting that Kim Deal was once fired via fax, so at the very least, the band is getting better at this firing thing.

As announced earlier this week, Pixies have tagged Paz Lenchantin (Zwan, A Perfect Circle) as Shattuck’s replacement. She’ll join the band when they return to the road next month.
