Alt-J has announced the departure of founding member and bassist Gwil Sainsbury. The band wrote on Twitter, “With regret, Gwil is leaving alt-J. This is purely a personal decision and as our best friend we support him completely.”

While attending Leeds University in 2007, Sainsbury formed the band alongside frontman Joe Newman, keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton, and drummer Thom Green. Five years later, their debut LP An Awesome Wave was released to commercial and critical acclaimed, and later won the 2012 Mercury Prize.
