In tackling other people’s songs, Aussie psych-rock duo Jagwar Ma have proven a light touch is often best. When they covered Solange’s spunky and sentimental “Losing You” last fall, they pulled back on the celebratory vibes and made it into a delightfully nervous pop-rock ballad. By slowing down the pace of Angel Haze’s “Echelon (It’s My Way)”, their remix uncovered new layers of primal sensuality.
Now, the pair take a similar approach with their cover of Arctic Monkeys’ “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?”. With little more than some acid synth thrown in over the original’s funky groove, they’ve played up more of the dub influences and imbued the track with an aesthetic that’s one part reggae, one part Ace of Base. Catch the replay below.
The cover comes from the band’s recent in-studio session with Australia’s Triple J, where they continued to support their debut album, Howlin’.
