Listen: Eels’ new song “Agatha Chang”

on January 29, 2014, 10:56am

Last week, eccentric alt-rocker Mark Oliver Everett, whose spent the last two decades as the singular mastermind behind Eels, announced his most personal project to date, The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett. A press release described the 13-track effort as an “extraordinarily vivid and intimate document of a personal struggle”, and today we get our first look behind Everett’s curtain with lead single “Agatha Chang”.

Fitting with the themes of emotional vulnerability, the track is one of Eels’ most quiet and contemplative to date, with little more than a simple acoustic guitar and lush string arrangement accompanying Everett’s deeply personal musings about lost love and deep-seated regret. Listen in below.

The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett is due out April 22nd via Everett’s own E Works. In addition to the standard album, there’ll be a deluxe bonus disc comprised of new cuts, unreleased material, and live tracks from sessions with KCRW and WNYC. Consult both tracklists below.
