Last fall, Washington, D.C. duo GEMS issued their Medusa EP, a four-track collection of dream-pop soothers led by the glowing single “Sinking Stone”. The pair have carried their enchanting aesthetics into the new year, this time turning their attention towards a cover of Seal’s ’90s hit single, “Don’t Cry”.
While the arrangement itself is a fairly faithful one (plus, see GEMS’ nearly carbon-copy artwork), the new rendition comes off much lighter, as it does away with most of the heavy theatrics of the original. Even so, it retains its own sense of poignancy, thanks in part to Lindsay Pitt’s pillowy, affecting vocals, and the song’s newfound breathing room. Listen in below.
