Believe it or not, but prior to last night Bruce Springsteen hadn’t played a show in his native New Jersey in 13 months. In fact, only once before — back in 1990 — did the Boss go an entire year without taking the stage at a Jersey venue. But as NJ.com reports, Springsteen was quick to right that wrong in 2014, appearing as a special guest at Asbury Park’s annual Light of Day benefit concert on Saturday night.
Springsteen first appeared on stage making during Jesse Malin’s set, joining him for a cover of The Ramones’ “Rock and Roll Radio”. Later, he sat in with Willie Nile for “One Guitar”.
To conclude the evening, Springsteen performed his own 14-song, hour-and-a-half headlining set, accompanied by longtime collaborator Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers. The setlist included the live debut of High Hopes song “Frankie Fell in Love” and the third-ever performance of “Hearts of Stone”, a song which dates back to 1978. He also performed “The Promised Land”, “Darkness on the Edge of Town”, and “Atlantic City” before wrapping up the evening a little after 1 am with “Thunder Road”.
